  • The Soul of Numbers

I was never good at math. My brain is not wired for numbers. It took me a long time to realize the importance of mathematics in relation to the metaphysical sciences.

I love music, and as it turns out music is highly mathematical as it is based on arithmetic, colors. Numbers transcend culture and other sociological bias, and in fact used in all sciences to express truth and certain abstract concepts.

When we gaze at the stars at night we often ponder if there is Chaos or Order in the Universe? You must decide this for yourself, but studying Numbers seriously presupposes that from the atoms in your body to the vast spaces of the Universe everything is choreographed to work in perfect harmony. Quantum physics now is starting to realize that everything in the Universe is somehow connected and interdependent.

Further proof to this is orderliness the Human genome – The DNA.  It is amazing that the DNA predestines that Humans have 2 eyes and ears and four limbs yet no to eyes are the same as no two human beings are the same. Fingerprints and retina exam will set apart even the identical twins.

Studying our name and birth date with specially coded for numbers is the esoteric science of numerology.

Numerology further presupposes that we Humans evolve by reincarnating into the physical plane over and over again. It also accepts that Karma as accumulation of our deeds and attributes is a lesson to all to learn and evolve. Our new incarnation, our new life is staged already in our prior life by our thoughts and deeds. Indeed the country and family we born into is direct result of our individual Karmic account.

The study of numbers can also shed light to other aspects of the hidden world. It can show the aspirant the true cosmology and our spiritual evolutionary path. The sacred science of the Kabala has the tree of life or Etz haChayim (עץ החיים) in Hebrew.

When I studied the ideas of Pythagoras, to my amazement he came to a very similar conclusion. The study of numbers from zero to 9 (or 10), shows men’s spiritual evolution and the cyclical nature of things. I have included the zero later as it reminded me to the sign of infinity, (a circle) and as such the true source of things. I think, the One (1) came later, and in my view it represents the Godhead in the emanated world (a mirror image of the eternal) except it now has polarity and hence became finite. I am not saying numbers are finite, but as they represent the material world and matter, they are. In fact, we, the counters of numbers are finite!

If you had a task to count all the numbers there are you would perish before you come to the end, hence proving that numbers are infinite but we people meddling in the dust of the world are finite and perishable.

Of course these ideas later lead me to the magic squares and other esoteric subjects that I will not address here in detail. It is suffice to say that the study of magic squares just reinforced my amazement and appreciation to numbers.

  • The Significance and the Legend of the Chintamani Stone

There is a special story about a piece of stone from the Star Sirius. (I was reading upon the Agni Yoga discussion forum). A meteorite stone supposedly, given to Nicholas Roerich, in circumstances hard to verify.

While the Chintamani Stone as other supernatural stones and objects, the search often relates to the physical item and the very possession of such item is the alleged key to its magic, in reality the physical item is seldom as important as its corresponding, “doppelganger” on the subtle plans.

    The Holy Grail

For example even centuries later it is hard to imagine if the chalice of Christ was a real tangible item or a metaphysical object important only in its esoteric meaning. When we have very little understanding of the historical time and life of Jesus of Nazareth, the existence of such grail can be elusive. The Holy Grail often mesmerized people’s imagination and they became obsessed by it. In reality they became obsessed by the search and ownership of a magical item.

The metaphorical lesson in the search and the “object”

The item is seldom as important as our mental projection of it. The importance of a Grail, or any philosopher’s stone is only as important as we project into it from our mind.

This is why I found the recent Agni yoga group’s fascination by the Chintamani Stone somewhat perplexing and curious.

The physical items while never as important as people made them out to be, have a certain place in the Spiritual path. It is often an important reminder that while seemingly lost in the mundane, we are on the right track. For example small items (albeit seldom precious stones) were customarily given to disciples as amulets and objects of great value. The guru customarily conjured these items from thin air, and gave them to the disciple, as the reminder that objects can be “created” with our minds if our mind is strong enough and the purpose is pure and just.

As everything fleeing, in our lifetime we sometimes find comfort and reassurance of something tangible that was created out of thin air, as a reminder that all we perceive is not an illusion and the physical realm is always supported by the layers of the unseen world.

When we  understand the true, esoteric message in the search of the philisopher’s stone, at that moment, we have the “stone” and all the world’s riches with it.
